2290 Form Due Date & Hvut Penalties

The deadline is the most important thing to every trucker while operating heavy vehicles on public roads. The IRS recommends heavy vehicle owners file the 2290 tax by the 2290 form due date or on time. For Truckers who file annual returns, the tax season begins on July 1 and ends on August 31. The tax year starts on July 01 and ends on June 30 for the following year. Therefore, never be late filing your HVUT tax return.

file 2290 form before the due date of August 31

If you acquire a heavy vehicle other than in July, you need to file form 2290 on the last day of the following month. Here are some 2290 form due dates for your awareness.

For example: Mr. Wilson purchased a vehicle in February and started using it on public roads in March here, the first used month of Wilson in March. Then he needs to file his 2290 tax return on the final day of April.

You must follow these deadline guidelines whether you are paying the tax or declaring a suspension of the tax. Your truck 2290 taxes must be filed and paid in full before the 2290 form due date to avoid incurring interest and penalties.

What Happens If I Don’t File Before The 2290 Form Due Date?

Generally, the IRS imposes Hvut penalties on late filers of Form 2290. It costs more in penalties than the actual tax to drive without paying heavy highway vehicle use tax (HVUT) on public roads. As we know, the IRS penalties are usually higher than the actual tax amount that we have to pay. The following are the penalties and interests of the IRS.

  • 4.5 percent on total tax due
  • 0.5 percent on the total tax amount
  • 0.54 percent interest charged per month

According to these rates, an HVUT liability that started at $550 would increase to nearly $700 by the end of the five-month term of breaking the law. In many states, they suspend the registration of taxable vehicles whose HVUT payment proof has not been produced in addition to these federal penalties. To avoid these kinds of penalties, truckers must file the Truck2290 tax on time.

What Are the Exemptions of Form 2290?

The IRS provides some exemptions from the 2290 tax in the following categories:
