What is IRS Form 2290?
Before starting 2290 online filing you need to know about Form 2290.
IRS Form 2290 is used to report heavy vehicle use tax for vehicles weighing 55,000 pounds or more with a mileage of more than 5000 miles and agricultural vehicles with a mileage of more than 7500 miles.
But vehicles that travel less than 5,000 miles (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles) are considered “tax-suspended vehicles“. For such vehicles, you don’t need to pay the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use tax but only need to file form 2290 online with the IRS.

Deadline for Filing Form 2290 Online
The truck tax season begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th of the following tax year. Therefore, truck owners and operators must file 2290 online within the IRS deadline to avoid Hvut penalties.

Annual Filing Deadline: “August 31st” is the Annual Filing Deadline to file 2290 forms online for using existing vehicles on US public highways.
Newly Purchased Vehicles: In the case of newly purchased vehicles, the Truck 2290 tax is due at different deadlines. Usually, a federal highway use tax is due to the IRS based on the FUM of the heavy vehicle. Truckers must file 2290 online by the last date of the following month of purchase.
Acquired Vehicles: For acquired vehicles, the 2290 Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is due on different dates. The deadline to e-file form 2290 and pay highway taxes to the IRS is by the last date of the following month of acquisition.
2290 Amendment Return: As we know, a 2290 amendment return is used to report the changes that occurred in heavy vehicles in the middle of the tax year. So, file 2290 amendment return by the last date of the following month of change.
